Fireclay/chamotte is mainly kaolinite clay. According to its plasticity, it can be divided into soft fireclay and hard fireclay.

Soft fireclay, also known as bond fireclay, with soft structure, fine particles and high plasticity and binding.Their main minerals are kaolinite and hydrous kaolinite, and the colors are gray, dark gray, even black, purple, pink and white. It is mainly used as a plasticity material of refractory materials. Suzhou soil is representative of the main soft fireclay.

Hard fireclay has dense structure, hard texture, its appearance color is generally a light gray or gray. The hard fireclay’s particles are very fine and is not easy to disperse in the water, the plasticity is low. In China, the hard fireclay is mostly the deposit of kaolinite mineral. The flint clay is the representative of the main hard fireclay.

The higher the content of kaolinite in fireclay, the better its quality, the higher the refractoriness of fireclay, and the wider the range of sintering and melting. The impurities in fireclay can reduce the refractoriness of the material, so the lower the impurity content, the higher the refractoriness of the fireclay.

Fireclay clinker points to hard fireclay clinker and calcined kaolinite. Hard fireclay clinker is the main raw material of fireclay refractory. Calcined kaolinite is characterized by low impurities, uniform distribution and stable quality. It is mainly used for high-grade fireclay bricks, unshaped refractory materials, cordierite-mullite kiln furniture, precision foundry and sanitary porcelain embryo.
